WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement regarding House passage of a resolution to hold Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress:
“Lois Lerner’s refusal to testify before Congress hinders the American people from learning the truth about the IRS scandal and prevents Congress from fully understanding what happened in order to protect taxpayers from future abuse. The intentional targeting of conservative groups by the IRS is completely unacceptable. No American should have to worry that their First Amendment rights could be denied by the executive branch solely on the basis of political affiliations and beliefs.
“Due to her refusal to cooperate with the investigation, the House voted today to hold Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress. It is critical that Congress learn the full truth of what happened and that the IRS is held accountable for its outrageous misuse of resources and power.”
