Speaker Boehner Names Pete Sessions Rules Chairman for 114th Congress

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) selected Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX) to continue to serve as Chairman of the House Committee on Rules for the 114th Congress.

Speaker Boehner issued the following statement:

"No one has worked harder to make the people’s House more open and accountable than Pete Sessions.  As Rules Chairman, he has seen to it that members of both parties have a genuine opportunity to contribute to the legislative process.  In this Congress, nearly 1,500 amendments have been offered on the House floor, nearly half of which were offered by the minority.  Greater openness and more scrutiny means better legislation, which is why Pete’s leadership will be even more vital in the months ahead as we work to address the people’s priorities.  Beyond all that, it remains a privilege to call Pete a friend and advisor.  He brings good cheer and resolve to his work, and enjoys the trust and confidence of his colleagues."

Rules Chairman Sessions issued the following statement:

"It is such an honor to continue serving as Chairman of the House Rules Committee for the 114th Congress.  I want to thank Speaker Boehner and my Republican colleagues for this tremendous privilege.

"My objective as Rules Chairman remains clear—to enact legislation that will get Americans back to work and to do it in accordance with the highest standards of fairness, openness, and accountability.  As in the 113th Congress, I will seek to provide all Members ample opportunity to present their ideas and debate the important issues before us.

"The American people expect action combined with integrity and transparency.  I am eager to work with my colleagues from both sides of the aisle in the House and Senate to implement a pro-growth agenda that will benefit all Americans."
