Sessions: Washington Red-tape shouldn’t interfere with families creating a home

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement in response to the House’s passage of the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act (H.R. 650) and the Mortgage Choice Act (H.R. 685), which help more Americans gain financial independence and afford mortgages:

“This week the House passed two pieces of legislation aimed at promoting a healthy economy and allowing more hard-working families to achieve the American Dream. Regulations put in place by Dodd-Frank have discouraged homeownership and stand in the way of families having the ability to attain financial independence. Costs of these burdensome regulations are passed from banks to consumers, and Washington red-tape should never stand in the way of families creating a home.

“Manufactured homes have served as an affordable choice for millions of Americans, and the Preserving Access to Manufactured Housing Act allows more families to afford these homes. This legislation also provides regulatory relief by granting protection to those that sell manufactured homes from unnecessary and costly fees.

“The Mortgage Choice Act creates an equal playing field for banks and mortgage lenders by providing greater clarification in mortgage transactions. This legislation provides consumers with more options and shields small institutions from unnecessary regulations, ensuring that more borrowers have the ability to get an affordable mortgage.

“By cutting red tape and making it easier for Americans to purchase a home, both of these pieces of legislation promote a healthy economy and preserve consumer choice.”
