Subcommittee on Rules and Organization Holds Members' Day Hearing on Article I: Effective Oversight and the Power of the Purse

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Last year, at the direction of the Speaker, the Rules Committee was tasked with holding hearings on specifically legislating. Today, the Subcommittee on Rules and Organization of the House Committee on Rules welcomed all Members of the House to participate in a “Members’ Day” discussion about this important issue.

"Americans have elected Representatives to voice their perspectives in Congress, and that’s what we saw in action today as the Subcommittee on Rules and Organization of the House heard Member positions on congressionally directed spending," said Subcommittee Chairman Doug Collins. "I’m grateful to Speaker Ryan and Chairman Sessions for listening to the array of views offered today and for productive testimony from my colleagues in House.”

“I would like to thank Subcommittee Chairman Doug Collins for leading this discussion and all of the Members who participated in today’s hearing. We heard from Members from both sides of the aisle who brought  insightful thoughts and opinions to the table. They expressed their ideas on how we can make better and smarter decisions as well as relayed their concerns about the pitfalls of slipping back into the old days of abuse," said Chairman Pete Sessions. "That was the point of today’s hearing. To learn the facts of the case and engage in a conversation with all members of the House, from both sides of the aisle—all with very different views. I look forward to continuing this discussion tomorrow with our expert witnesses and learning more about their thoughts on specifically legislating and the appropriate use of Congress’ power of the purse.”
