WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chairman Michael C. Burgess (R-TX) and Ranking Member James P. McGovern (D-MA) released the following statement on the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump:
For America to remain the strongest, most powerful nation in the world, we must be united, said Chairman Burgess and Ranking Member McGovern. We strive to live up to this ideal on the House Rules Committee. Together, we work to create an atmosphere of respectful dialogue. At times when we have heated, passionate debates, we still work out our differences in a non-violent way. While we differ in our political beliefs, we are all Americans who love our country deeply. Violence and hatred towards each other will only continue to divide us and tear us apart. We must come together as Americans, not fight as enemies. We firmly commit to calling out violent rhetoric whenever and wherever it happens. At the end of the day, it has been and it always will be the ballot not the bullet that determines our leaders and decides the destiny of our great nation. As Chair and Ranking Member of the House Rules Committee, we fully condemn any and all acts of political violence in the United States, including the assassination attempt on President Trump.
