Sessions Supports Bill to Give Low-Income Students Equal Opportunity for Education

October 21, 2015

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement after in voting in favor of legislation to allow low-income students in the District of Columbia the opportunity to attend better schools by reauthorizing the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Act:

“In the 12 years since Congress first enacted a federal private school voucher program for children in Washington, D.C., graduation rates among students with scholarships have increased dramatically, college enrollment is hovering near 90 percent and communities in need have improved. The Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Act has been a remarkable success, and I was proud to vote to reauthorize this transformational program for children who have shown that they have the aptitude to succeed and give back to their communities if simply given the opportunity to do so.”
