American Families Deserve Increased Oversight and Transparency in Federal Funding

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement after voting in favor of a measure that provides for greater accountability in federal funding for scientific research by requiring non-technical explanations of a project’s scientific merits and how it serves the national interest:

“House Republicans have made a commitment to providing greater oversight and accountability to how hard-earned tax dollars are spent, and the bill which passed the House today is a strong example of these efforts. The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports thousands of projects that aim to serve the national interest, yet a number of these projects have questionable, or at least not obvious, merits. Scientific research is important to the American economy, defense of our country and education of our children, yet the NSF itself has recognized the need for increased transparency for federally funded research.  American families deserve a non-technical and clear explanation of how a project benefits the national interest, and this bill would guarantee exactly that.”
