Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following joint statement after the House’s passage of a bill requiring a joint resolution of approval by the Congress and the president’s signature before any new executive action takes effect. The bill included an amendment authored by Chairman Sessions and Congressmen Andy Barr (R-KY), Rodney Davis (R-IL) and Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) that would require analysis on the impact of federal regulations on jobs.
“President Obama’s unchecked abuse of executive power is hurting American families and our economy, and it needs to stop,” Sessions said. “Last year alone, the total cost of federal regulations are estimated to be in the hundreds of billions of hard-earned taxpayer dollars, and 72% of small businesses say regulations hurt their bottom line. It is our duty as members of the legislative branch to ensure the president’s actions do not continue to harm the country by injecting more uncertainty into the marketplace and inhibiting job growth during this time of shaky economic recovery. Our amendment takes an important step to do just that.”
“Kentucky has lost thousands of jobs due to the President’s regulatory overreach,” Barr said. “I am pleased to once again work with Congressman Sessions on this important amendment because we must hold unelected bureaucrats accountable and require administrative agencies to fully analyze the impact proposed regulations will have on jobs in the public and private sectors.”
“Constituents in my district have seen firsthand how overregulation by this administration has led to slower job growth, less full-time jobs, and fewer opportunities for Americans to get ahead,” Davis said. “I am proud to join my colleagues in offering this amendment to put another check on federal regulations by requiring an analysis of the impact they will have on jobs.”
“Ohioans are losing jobs because of new government rules and regulations that are disconnected from the reality of our economy,” Wenstrup said. “When government bureaucrats impose new mandates on our economy, they must consider the effect on employment. I’m glad to work with Congressman Sessions to introduce this common-sense amendment.”
