Pete Sessions: Iran Deal a ‘Historic Mistake’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement on the House’s vote on three measures demonstrating opposition to the Iran Nuclear Agreement:

“This week’s votes expressed what so many of our members and a vast majority of the American public have been saying for months: the Obama administration’s so-called deal with Iran is not a deal at all – it is a gift to a country that hates America and our allies and seeks our demise. The time and focus with which the House took to debate this deal underscores its historical significance and the potential global consequences that could arise because of the president’s actions.

“The House of Representatives showed overwhelming bipartisan opposition to the deal because it does almost nothing to stop Iran from building nuclear weapons, yet economically bolsters it in a way that could spawn a growth of terrorism and a spread of evil the likes of which we have never seen. In moments like these which define history, the president should look for support in Congress and work together to chart a path forward. Yet once again, President Obama has chosen to go it alone and move ahead with this reckless deal, despite the majority opposition demonstrated by the House. It is my hope that we will reverse course on this historic mistake before it is too late.”

The three measures were as follows: H. Res. 411 expressed the House’s finding that President Obama has not complied with a section of the Iran Nuclear Agreement that requires Congress to review so-called “side deals” that Iran has made with other entities that could potentially endanger the U.S. and its allies. H.R. 3460 would prevent the president from lifting economic sanctions on Iran. Finally, H.R. 3461 was a measure to approve of the overall deal, which overwhelmingly failed.
