Sessions Applauds Introduction of Trade Promotion Authority

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, released the following statement regarding today’s introduction of Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities Act of 2014:

"I am proud to be an original sponsor of the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities Act of 2014 to reauthorize Trade Promotion Authority.  Trade Promotion Authority is a key piece of United States trade policy that significantly strengthens Congress’ role in expanding trade through global agreements.

"Trade agreements lower international economic barriers to help grow our economy, create American jobs, and open new markets to U.S. businesses and entrepreneurs.  Previous trade agreements have expanded our economy and created jobs at home in agriculture, ranching, and manufacturing by ensuring that American companies can sell their goods, products, and services to markets around the world.

"Trade Promotion Authority allows Congress to give the executive branch its marching orders when negotiating trade agreements with our global partners. Recently, TPA has resulted in key trade agreements, including agreements approved in 2012 with Columbia, Panama, and South Korea. These agreements have supported an estimated 250,000 jobs across our country. Through TPA, Congress and the executive branch can work together to ensure that America’s global competitiveness is second to none and that our economy remains the strongest in the world."
