Sessions: Cyber Security Bills Combat Threats, Protect Privacy

Washington, DC – Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Committee on Rules, today issued the following statement in response to the House’s passage this week of two bills to combat the growing threat of cyber attacks:

“Cyber threats can compromise everything from personal privacy to intellectual property to our national security, and the problem is only getting worse. These bipartisan bills allow businesses to voluntarily share information with the federal government in a timely, transparent and efficient manner, all while protecting the privacy and civil liberties of those involved. The legislation passed this week is an important first step to combat a threat that has the power to take down not just our computer systems, but our infrastructure and economy, too.

“While there is still much work to be done on this issue, the Protecting Cyber Networks Act and the National Cybersecurity Protection Advancement Act are pieces of legislation that can make a big difference in effectively monitoring the unlawful action of bad actors online. I applaud the Committees on Homeland Security and Intelligence for their hard work on this issue and urge the Senate to act swiftly to send these measures to the president’s desk.”
