Sessions to Serve on Task Force to Develop Bold Agenda for Confident America

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, last week was named a leader of one of the six committee-led task forces announced by House Speaker Paul Ryan on February 4, 2016. The task forces will be charged with developing a bold, pro-growth agenda and will be run by committee chairs of jurisdiction, while also including input from all members to ensure broad perspectives and ideas.

Sessions will lead the task force charged with “Restoring Constitutional Authority,” with the goal of reclaiming power that has been abused by the executive branch under President Obama by reforming the rulemaking process, keeping agency authority in check, exercising the power of the purse and conducting regular and robust oversight.

“Simply put, this is about liberty and protecting the Constitution of the United States of America,” Sessions said. “This is about keeping United States representatives, who are the closest to the American people we represent and are elected every two years, in charge of the duties prescribed to us under Article I of the Constitution. Under President Obama, we have seen the basic powers of the Congress – including strong oversight of other branches of government and federal agencies, as well as maintaining the power of the purse – snatched by faceless and unelected bureaucrats who make life too hard for average Americans. I hear from my constituents on this every day, and I don’t need to remind them that it was executive branch bureaucrats who thought the Obamacare website would work just fine, who thought overregulation of private industry was a good idea, and who thought more red tape and larger government was the answer to our struggling economy. As a member of the Restoring Constitutional Authority task force, I look forward to finding the best solutions to get our branches of government balanced once again, just as our Founding Fathers intended.”

The other Committee chairmen who will head up the Restoring Constitutional Authority task force with Sessions include Hal Rogers of Appropriations, Bob Goodlatte of Judiciary, Rob Bishop of Natural Resources and Jason Chaffetz of Oversight and Government Reform.
