Sessions Supports Measure to Create National Standard for Food Labeling

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement on the House’s passage of legislation to create a uniform national standard for the labeling of food products that contain genetically engineered plants or ingredients:

“This common-sense bill brings back freedom of choice to consumers in terms of allowing food shoppers to decide what is best for themselves and their families when it comes to genetically modified ingredients. Nine out of ten scientists agree – and the FDA has confirmed – there are no safety issues with GMOs compared with other foods. This legislation will allow food companies to advertise when their products are made without GMOs, but will not force mandatory labeling that is misleading to consumers and causes unnecessary fear, anxiety and expense. There is an important role for genetically modified food that can be grown in challenging conditions without the need for expensive pesticides and equipment in order to alleviate hunger both in the U.S. and abroad. With this in mind, I was proud to support this free market solution that will ensure food companies are able to provide competitively priced products for American consumers.”
