Sessions Supports USA FREEDOM Act to Protect National Security & Civil Liberties

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today released the following statement regarding House passage of H.R. 3361, the USA FREEDOM Act:

“Over the past few years, we have seen a vibrant debate in this country over the importance of striking an appropriate balance between protecting every Americans’ civil liberties and providing our intelligence agencies with the tools necessary to ensure our national security.  I believe that the USA FREEDOM Act appropriately addresses these concerns because it allows for attacks to be intercepted while ensuring that Americans’ constitutional rights are not violated.

“The USA FREEDOM Act reforms intelligence-gathering programs to end bulk collection of Americans’ telephone and electronic communication records, implements limits on what information the federal government can gather, and provides more transparency for the American people.  I’m pleased that these reforms go even further to secure the civil liberties of the American people than President Obama’s plan and I applaud the House Judiciary Committee’s diligent work on this important issue.”
