Washington, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement after voting in favor of a measure that would provide for greater flexibility among states to exclude abortion providers from using Medicaid funds:
“As a father, I have always strongly believed that every effort should be made to protect and honor the sanctity of all human life. In light of the barbaric Planned Parenthood videos released earlier this year, it is more important than ever that states be empowered to choose to withhold Medicaid funds from flowing to providers of abortion if they so choose. We have seen great success in this realm in my home state of Texas since our 2011 decision to exclude abortion providers from the Medicaid Women’s Health Program, including a consistent decline in pregnancy rates since that same year. It is my sincere hope that this law is passed so that other states may too have the flexibility they are entitled to under the tenants of federalism in the Constitution.”
