Sessions Votes to Hold IRS Accountable to the American People

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement after voting in favor of two measures that would hold the IRS accountable for their actions and ensure their employees are held to the same standards as the American people:

“This week, Americans were once again reminded that this Administration is for big government policies instead of free-marketplace solutions. Abuse at the IRS is rampant and it cannot continue. They have misused hard-earned taxpayer dollars through the user-fee account without any Congressional oversight for far too long. If we do not act, the IRS will continue to operate without regard to their responsibility to hardworking taxpayers. Last year alone, the agency spent only 10 percent of the user-fee account on tax payer services resulting in a 73 percent reduction in funding from user fees for taxpayer assistance. In addition, they have repeatedly turned a blind eye to delinquencies on their employees’ tax obligations while continuing to hold Americans accountable for every cent they owe to the government. Enough is enough. Today I voted to deliver a clear message to the IRS, they do not answer to Washington bureaucrats, they answer to the American people.”
