Sessions Votes to Improve Forest Management and Prevent Wildfires

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement in response to the House’s passage of legislation that improves forest management activities and returns resilience to overgrown, fire-prone forested lands:

“Catastrophic wildfires have become all too common across our magnificent nation, and a root cause of these fires is poor forest management on public lands. Bureaucratic hurdles have stood in the way of important restorative measures across millions of acres of forest, and without immediate action it will be too late to save this precious terrain. Throughout the last 20 years, wildfires have been responsible for the loss of hundreds of lives and have had negative impacts on watershed health, wildlife habitats and man-made structures. As a proud Eagle Scout, I fondly remember the day I earned my forestry merit badge and it is saddening to see such destruction as a result of wildfires. I applaud the actions taken by the House to improve the health and resiliency of federal forests.”
