Sessions Votes for School Choice and Increased Opportunities for DC Children

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement after the House passed legislation that would reauthorize the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results (SOAR) Act. Specifically, it authorizes $60 million in annual funding for education in the District of Columbia and gives scholarships to low-income students:

“All children deserve the opportunity to have the best education possible, and as a proud parent I know the importance of school choice. Unfortunately there are far too many examples of failings within public school systems across the United States, and some parents are left with few options. The common sense bill that passed the House today encourages low-performing public schools in the District of Colombia to make improvements, while allowing more children the ability to attend a school that best fits their individual needs. I was proud to support this important piece of legislation, and am confident that this program will make a positive impact on the lives of many families across the District of Columbia.”
