“Mr. Speaker, I have chosen to leave Congress at the end of this term. I take the unusual step of announcing this from the floor of Congress for two reasons. First, this is where my fellow Californians sent me to represent them. Second, I am a proud institutionalist, and I believe that this institution is as great as it has ever been.

WASHINGTON, DC – The House Rules Committee has reported a modified open rule providing for consideration of H.R. 359, a bill to reduce Federal spending and the deficit by terminating taxpayer financing of presidential election campaigns and party conventions.

WASHINGTON, DC –The House Rules Committee’s Subcommittee on Legislative and Budget Process held a hearing today on H.R. 114, the Biennial Budgeting and Appropriations Act of 2011. This bill would put in place a two-year budget process that streamlines and improves the fiscal management and oversight of government programs. To further emphasize the need for budget reform, today marks the1000th day since the Democratic-controlled Senate has passed a budget.

CAIRO, Egypt – Congressman David Dreier (R-CA), Chairman of the House Rules Committee and the House Democracy Partnership, has arrived in Cairo, Egypt with a bipartisan Congressional delegation to lead a team of observers of the nation's first post-revolution democratic parliamentary election. In the days leading up to the election, Dreier is meeting with party representatives, government officials and voters to discuss this historic election. He will lead a team of official election observers at the start of the elections on November 28.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House Rules Committee was recognized for having one of the best websites on Capitol Hill today and given a “112th Congress Bronze Mouse Award.” The award was given by the Congressional Management Foundation (CMF), a nonpartisan nonprofit working to improve communications between citizens and Congress and enhance operations in Capitol Hill offices. CMF has assessed and graded congressional websites and issued these awards since 2001. CMF released the following statement regarding the award:

WASHINGTON, DC – Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-CA) issued the following statement today after the House passed the long-pending Free Trade Agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea. The agreements were all passed with solid bipartisan support. The U.S.-Colombia agreement was approved 262-167, the U.S.-Panama agreement was approved 300-129, and the U.S.-Korea agreement was approved 278-151.

WASHINGTON, DC – Rules Committee Chairman David Dreier (R-CA) led the Committee today in advancing the long-pending Free Trade Agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea to the House floor for their approval next week. The rule approved by the Committee also provides for consideration of the bipartisan Generalized System of Preferences/Trade Adjustment Assistance Extension (GSP/TAA) legislation already approved by the U.S. Senate.
